Gwena Herman runs a sports program known as the Bennett Blazers for children living with physical disabilities. The Blazers are a part of the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Physically Challenged Sports Program, which provides year-round, competitive, and recreational activities to those in the greater Baltimore area. The Blazers offer a multitude of sports including ice skating, swimming, football, volleyball, and, of course, lacrosse!

Helicopter Parents: We have all heard of them. Most of us have experienced them. Some of you might even be one. These are the parents who are hyper involved in their child’s life. Perhaps what you didn’t know is that there are different types of helicopter parents. I have identified three major types and they are not all bad. However, I am sure there are plenty more types out there waiting to be discovered by intrepid coaches and teachers.

Mary Kate O’Neil (Boston College 2017, Midfield) was born and bred on the lacrosse field. She’s been playing lacrosse since childhood and took her talent to Boston College in 2013. As a senior at BC, she competed in the NCAA Division I Final. Mary Kate recently discussed her tips for success and her college lacrosse career with us.

The impact of Harlem Lacrosse goes well beyond the lacrosse field. Students of the Harlem Lacrosse program show higher regular attendance than their in-school peers, have higher passing rates, have lower college dropout rates than their peers, and earn more academic scholarships. The Swax Lax ball helps them achieve lacrosse success.
