Drills to Create Scoring Opportunities

Roll Dodge, Split Dodge, and Face Dodge with Swax Lax Balls

This video from NJ State High School Champions Kate and Lauren Riley demonstrates how to perform three essential dodges for offensive players in lacrosse: the roll dodge, the split dodge, and the face dodge. These dodges will help you become a more dynamic attacker by developing quick movements that allow you to shake off defenders and create scoring opportunities. The Swax Lax training balls, with their low bounce and soft feel, are perfect for practicing these dodges safely and effectively.

Roll Dodge

Typically used in the 8-meter crease while driving towards the goal, but can also be used in the midfield for clearing:
  • Start with your stick in your right hand.
  • Plant your left foot forward.
  • Protect the stick with both hands in front of your body as you curl your body around, turning your back to the defender.
  • You'll end up facing away from the goal, ready to shoot.
  • Adding complexity: While curling, switch the stick to your left hand for a shot on the opposite side of the defender, creating more space and freedom for your hands.

Split Dodge

Requires confidence using both hands:
  • Start with your dominant hand (e.g., left) on top of the stick.
  • Plant your left foot first.
  • Quickly bring your left hand down to the bottom of the stick and your right hand up to the top.
  • Keep the stick close to your body throughout the movement.
  • Now with your right hand on top, you have both hands free for a quick shot on goal!

Face Dodge

A simple yet effective dodge:
  • Keep the stick in the same hand throughout.
  • Perform an exaggerated "full moon" cradle motion across your face.
  • Step with your opposite foot as you cradle, tricking the defender to shift one way.
  • Immediately drive back towards your dominant side for the shot.
  • Legwork is crucial! Use a strong push-off to create a convincing fake.
  • A subtle head nod can further mislead the defender.
By practicing these dodges with Swax Lax balls, you'll improve your agility, hand speed, and deception skills, making you a more dangerous offensive threat on the lacrosse field. Swax Lax balls are designed to have less bounce and minimal rebounds, which makes for a more productive practice environment without the hassle of chasing errant balls. Additionally, their softer texture reduces the fear of getting hit, ensuring a safer training session. Whether training indoors or outside, on a field or smaller spaces, Swax Lax balls provide a realistic and safe alternative to standard lacrosse balls, helping you train effectively and confidently.
